As the protagonist in the story, Michael Jones lived a life hating the world for what society made of it. He's a Philosopher who disrespected humanity as a weak, inferior race who went through life believing that a God controlled their fate, when in fact we are alone in the universe. Suddenly, one day, Michael woke on a hospital bed in Brookhaven Hospital, being told the news that he and his wife were in a severe auto accident, and that he would be bound to a wheelchair as a result. It is here that his pain would consume him forever.
